The fundamental changes in U.S. strategic thinking, both in terms
of analysis of threats and integration of technology at the battlefield
commander's level is a revolution in the way military planners, outfitters
and operational assets think. Here in somewhat layman's terms is
an introduction to the Rumsfeld Military Transformation.
The Rumsfeld Military Transformation: A Primer
This report explores the Rumsfeld directives to the Pentagon and the efforts funded by the President's budget. It quotes the Secretary as he explained this new strategy and approach to the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee and provides analysis, in laymen's language as to what key elements of this transformation are about. It takes the politically incorrect approach of looking back how things used to barely work and compare them to Rumsfeld's already validated new approach.
The report focuses on real world examples of how the transformation has already begun and where it will improve our military capabilities both in the near future as well as the long term. It documents the intentions of a new nuclear deterrent strategy that both increases our deterrent and security while reducing the number of strategic nuclear weapons.
The report looks at new systems being tested today and how new thinking
is already integrating systems that weren't intended to "play together"
and using them in ways the designers never expected. This all leading
to improved systems based upon real world, working system integrations
without decades of polite academic research and billions in industry
funding.
And finally, the report cites previous work and examples of "thinking
out of the box" that made it possible for U.S. forces to be so successful,
realizing current systems are the results of past years development combined
with today's open mindset.
