Activities:
 
Islamic extremist group operating in the southern Philippines led by Abdurajik Abubakar Janjalani. Split from the Moro National Liberation Front in 1991. Uses bombs, assassinations, kidnappings for ransom, and extortion payments from companies and businessmen in its efforts to promote an Iranian-style Islamic state in Mindanao, Philippines.  Staged a raid on the town of Ipil in Mindanao in April 1995, the group's first large-scale action.  Also blamed three small bombs exploded in hotels in Zamboanga City also in southerm Philippines.  Thought to have expanded its operations off of Mindaneo into other neighboring countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia.  The group is believed to have attacked lighty railway station in Manilla in 1993.
External Aid Probably has ties to Islamic extremists in the Middle East.
Strength:  
About 200 members, mostly younger Muslims, many of whom have studied or worked in the Gulf states, where they were exposed to radical Islamic ideology.

Khadaffy Abubakar Janjalani
a.k.a Daf, a.k.a Pek
Brother of Abdurajik Janjalani who founded Abu Sayaff.  Born March 3, 1975, in Isabela City, Philippines.  Assumed leadership of Abu Sayaff after his brother's death in 1998.  Indicted in absentia in Wash, D.C. for terrorist actions and placed on the FBI's Most Wanted List.
