The name is translated to "Al-Qaeda Organization in the Land of Two Rivers". A Salafi movement organization directly tied to Al-Qaeda. a senior Al-Qaeda leader in Iraq and is believed to have become the new
leader following the death of Musab Al-Zarqawi in June of 2006.

Musab al-Zarqawi
Led the Al-Qaeda in Iraq group until his death on
June 7, 2006Declared all out war on Shiites in September of 2005. Zarqawi was actually not an Iraqi, having migrated just prior to U.S.-Coaltion invasion of Iraq from Jordan. He had experience as an Afghanistan fighter (presumably where he met bin Laden and/or Aymnan Al-Zawahiri). |
