LeadershipAbu Bakar Bashir, et. all
Activities: 
Began developing plans in 1997 to target US interests in Singapore and, in 1999, conducted videotaped casings of potential US targets in preparation for multiple attacks in Singapore. A cell in Singapore acquired four tons of ammonium nitrate (fertilizer bomb material), which has not yet been found.  In December 2001, Singapore authorities arrested 15 Jemaah Islamiyah members, some of whom had trained in al-Qaida camps in Afghanistan, who planned to attack the US and Israeli Embassies and British and Australian diplomatic buildings in Singapore. Additionally, the Singapore police discovered forged immigration stamps, bombmaking materials, and al-Qaida-related material in several suspects’ homes.

External Aid:  Largely unknown, probably self-financing; possible al-Qaida support.

Strength: Malaysian cells may comprise 200 member, other locations unknown.

Links:  Al-Qaeda training camp in Poso, Indonesia many other run training camps in Indonesia.  May also be linked to other regional terrorist groups such as Laskar Jihad and to the Philippines' Abu Sayyaf.

Abu Bakar Baasyir
A.k.a. Abu Bakar Bashir was at one time the spritual leader of JI).  Baasyir as a cleric has preached violence, support for the Jihad and OBL.  Born in East Java (1938).  Teacher and cleric for decades, later exec on Mujahideen Council in Jarkata. Fled to Malaysia after Suharto  regime jailed him for subversion- attempting to create Islamic State.

Nurjaman Riduan Isamuddin
Former student of Baasyir, was thought to splinter off to form Kumpulan Militan/Mujahideen Malaysia (KMM) another Al-Qaeda linked terrorist group active in the region.  Isamuddin is currently in custody at Guantanimo Bay.  It is not known who has replaced Isamuddin.

Convicted JI terrorist, involved in the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 200.  He is currently on death row (data as of January16, 2006)
