Ayman al-Zawahiri
Born: June 9, 1951 in Maadi, Egypt By age 14 he had joined the Muslim Brotherhood, a radical Islamic assocation who wished to produce the Islamic Caliphite throughout the Middle East using legal, non-violent means. Zawahiri graduated from Cairo University's Medical School in 1974, and received a post-graduate degree in surgery in 1978. In 1979 he was associated with the more violent Islamic Jihad (Egyptian Islamic Jihad - EIJ). After Anwar Sadat was assasinated, he was arrested and spent some time in jail. In the early 1980s he joined the Mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan, meeting Osama Bin Laden. When OBL split off from MAK and formed Al-Qaeds, Al-Zawahiri was there as his second-in-command. It is believed that Zawahiri's medical skills are keeping Osama Bin Laden alive, as OBL has kidney disease and is on dialysis.
