Browser Notes:

MILNET hopes that the home page display is pleasant to read, however, we also know that some browsers have difficulty displaying fonts in their correct sizes.  Also, some Windows systems may have incorrect or faulty font installations that are not apparent until a browser makes that font problem apparent.  And to make things worse,  the Internet Explorer versions allow the user to select a new size for the basic font size, creating havoc to any page formatting.

The MILNET home page features code that attempts to determine the most common browser setup optimization.  However, this code is by no means foolproof and when it comes to Internet Explorer, you will have to have some patience in order to find the right combination of optimizations to get a page that looks acceptable.

One of the indicators that the browser code has not detected your browser correctly is the font size on the MILNET homepage. If your browser has very large text, then your are probably using Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer

Note that there are two icons on either side of the text label "MILNET Featured Sections" on the homepage.

The icon on the left (Internet Explorer) will change to a page setup that is hopefully better suited to your browser, providing a smaller font and fitting the text on the page in a much more readable form.

If this doesn't solve the viewing problem, Internet Explorer users are advised to determine which font size has been set as the default font size.  To do this, click on the menu option "View">>"Text Size" and note the font size with the black dot next to it.  You should select "Larger" and make sure your location reads "http://www.milnet.com/index-IE.html".  This is the optimized Internet Explorer configuration.

If you don't like the looks of this this setup, then click on the Netscape Icon (the icon on the right) and select the "smallest" font size.  Note that the browser code CANNOT detect which size font you have told IE to "force" as  your browsing default, so we cannot fully optimize to your setup.  You might considering downloading the Netscape browser at:
http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp
There are several other browsers which correctly display font sizes, for instance the Firefox browser (Mozilla.org).  Watch out though, you can also change the default font size (Ctrl-mouse-wheel) with this browser as well.

Tiny Font Problem

If your text font appears to be too tiny, then try clicking on the icon on the right (Netscape).  Hopefully this page setup will be more suited to your browser.

Regardless of whether your browser is Internet Explorer or Netscape, you should try the two icons and if possible adjust the font size to see which suits your browser best.  You may have to look carefully to find out how (if it is even possible) to modify the default font size in your browser.

Once you have decided which setup looks the best to you, then bookmark the MILNET page (save as "create a favorite in IE speak"), so that you always go directly to the correct page setup.  Don't forget to save your preferences and exit all instances of your browser in order to lock in your changes.  You can also put an icon on your desktop labelled MILNET and click on that to bring up the MILNET page in the optimized state.

If your browser does not show a MILNET display you can live with, describe the problem in an email to milnet@milnet.com. We'll do our best to solve the problem for you. Tell us what browser version you are using and what you don't like about the display -- be very specific.  Don't send a screenshort or graphics, our anti-spam does not like email with graphics or binary files.

Thanks
