Canadian Intelligence Agencies

MILNET presents a brief on the Canadian Intelligence Community.

Canadian Security Intelligence Service

Overview

Canada, to Americans, seems a mystery. From the almost romantic and adventuresome protrayal of the Royal Mounted Police, to current politics including the influence of separtist provinces, the Canadian political scene has always been a mixed bag of U.S., French, and British interests.

The Canadian participation in the U.S.' own revolutionary war and events leading up to that most important of American history has at times led one to believe that the northern extension of the continent has been a breeding ground of malcontents or anti-American sentiment. Fortunately, the reality has proven time and time again that Canada is not only a staunch ally but a reasoning and stabilizing force on U.S. futures.

The Intelligence Community is no exception. With the two agencies we list, as well as a number of reports that are recommended reading, we hope to enlighten you, as we have been, to the simple fact that Canada takes their intellience seriously.

Witness the care with which accountability to the government AND the people is verified by the release of the Auditor General of Canada November 1996 Report, Chapter 27: "The Canadian Intelligence Community--Control and Accountability". You'll not be able to find a better summary of the Canadian Intelligence Community than this most excellent report.

Look at the mandate of the CSIS, the most important of agencies for intelligence countering risks to security of Canada.

And much like the U.S., the Canadian Intelligence Community is well represented on the Worldwide Web, a refreshing admission of the evils of the world that require intelligence agencies to exist, and the open treatment of those agency's missions and ideals.

Below are the four web sites recommended to us by a rather high official in the government of Canada (Thank you kind Sir!). Go take a look and be impressed as we were. Hey, Neighbor! Thanks for the protection by way of your own.
