Below we list the various intelligence agencies, grouped by the intelligence function they perform. Note however, that in some cases the missions are sheer conjecture, since outside of the U.S., intelligence agency missions are not public knowledge. Note too that even in the U.S. it is rumored that parts of the National Security Act remain classified. This being the body of law that defines the activities of U.S. intelligence agencies, it is quite possible that the U.S. public is also unaware of certain missions of certain agencies. Note also that this material originally was compiled prior to the breakup of the former Soviet Union, thus country names have not been changed to reflect modern changes to country names and borders (for instance East and West Germany are shown as separate countries). Where former Soviet Union countries are shown, it is thought that the same organizations exist but under new names, and one would hope new management.
