The following is a list of the large "automatic" pistols available at the retail level in the U.S. as of January 1, 1989. This list does not show what guns are available through gun dealers on a special order basis, or what is available through private trade from gun collectors.
Late in 1989, anti-gun lobbyists won a major victory in the control of weapons in the U.S., after a number of mass murders were committed with so called "assault weapons".
Unfortunately, while landmark legislation passed in a number of states, which dealt with "semi-automatic assault weapons", 90% of this legislation effected the majority of weapons intended for sport which also just happened to allow loading via magazine. Ironically, there were no laws passed during the rush to outlaw semi-automatic weapons, which effected the horrible errors propounded on society by well meaning but incompetent custodians of the mentally ill.
Not one law was inacted to increase the review criteria for mental patients, nor was any authority or responsibility added to police or psychiatric personnel to detain or place surveillance on those proven to be about to commit murder. Nor is there any laws which check a person's mental health history before allowing purchase. So while we have removed a few weapons from the retail chain, a person threatening suicide or murder can still go down and buy a weapon and commit mass murder.
NOTE: Since 1989, laws regarding so-called "assault weapons" have effected the manufacture and import of these loosely identifed weapons types. However, militaries, criminals, and mercenaries are still able to procure the weapons listed here.
