Britain paying for ex-Terrorists continuing disloyalty

There are many observers of the Northern Ireland scene that must be more than a little perplexed at the sight
of Sinn Fein MP's taking up their offices in Parliament and their sizeable allowances while still showing disloyalty to the crown by refusing to take the oath. This at a time when one wing of the armed Republican movement, the Real IRA is still at war with Britain and indeed something like twenty five republican fighters, believed to be from Gerry Adams own Provisional movement, are reported by the Bogota authorities to have trained or are training with the FARC Marxist revolutionaries in Colombia.

The very limited Provisional IRA disarmament program has seen less than 10% of its total arsenal made 'unavailable' and none of its more modern and effective weapons at all. The Provisional IRA continues to maintain discreet links with the breakaway movement, the Real IRA. Indeed with terrorist movements throughout Europe, including ETA in Spain and Islamic movements in Germany and the Balkans.

Provisionals preparing for peace to fail

There are constant suggestions from Balkan sources and in particular the Croatian NSEI or National Electronic Surveillance Service which has close links to the NSA and indeed runs a number of joint communications interception stations with the Americans, that the Provisional IRA is still seeking to improve its arsenal through the local black market.  It may indeed eventually demilitarize many of its weapons, but there is now little doubt that it intends to maintain a smaller but far more lethal capability.

The Provisional 'Engineers'  in Colombia are there to develop improved explosive devices and methods of detonation far away from the prying eyes of British Security.  Stormont economy minister Sir Reg Empey went further "The issues of visas and fund-raising have to be looked at. There is a clear case to answer" adding both that  "It is clear the IRA have been heavily involved in helping FARC develop new terrorist capabilities designed to inflict mass murder and carnage on innocent people" and "At a time when the forces of the democratic free world are being mobilised against Islamic terrorists, there is no justification for leniency against Irish republican terrorists or their representatives, when they are in clear collaboration with sworn enemies of the United States."

While the Cats away, the.....

There is a severe risk, denied by the Security Services of course, that the concentration on Islamic terrorism has not only seen the pre-occupation of G Branch, but a steady transfer of T Branch officers away from domestic targets. Britain's security and counter-terrorist services are stretched to breaking point and the Blair Government has done little constructive in the way of providing the necessary budget and support for the major expansion urgently needed.

Worse still, it will be months before MI5 can hope to have sufficient trained officers and linguists to properly address the problems of Islamic terrorism and the varied support movements operating in Britain.

While this level of turmoil exists in internal security, so does the opportunity for the Irish Republican Movement to rearm and reorganize for the future. Meanwhile Gerry Adams, Martin McGuiness and their cronies in Sinn Fein can happily pocket £100,000 a year in expenses, provided by their main target the British Taxpayer.
