The ultimate vision of capability to be provided by Phases II/III is that JDST and data provided through GCSS will be accessible to users across the entire planning and execution spectrum and all echelons of command from unified command headquarters to tactical-level commands in the field. The JDSTs will use standard, commercial-off-the-shelf, inexpensive communications equipment and desk-top computer workstations, cellular phones, pagers, etc. in a web-based distributive environment. This will provide real-time common user access to Government and commercial data and data sources, tools, and interoperable, Service specific, planning, and execution monitoring decision support tools. A Netscape/Explorer-like capability most closely models the desired capability where client applications (either loaded via peripheral media or provided via network software) exploit web-based data and applications to provide users access to logistics data, tools and services through HTML (or other) hot links. The government intranet backbone will be supported by the Defense Information Systems Agency.
