HMS Astute
Nuclear Powered Attack Submarine

U.K. Royal Navy
An extension of the performance of the Trafalgar Class Batch 1 fleet..  Tomahawk Block IV (Tactical Tomahawk) cruise missile from Raytheon fired from the 533mm torpedo tubes, uses TERCOM terrain contour mapping-assisted inertial navigation system and includes an improved propulsion system and Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance capability.  S<>ix 533mm torpedo tubes, and will be equipped with Spearfish torpedoes and mines. (up to 36).   The Spearfish (wire-guided, active/passive homing head) torpedo with a range of 65km at 60kt.   Astute is fitted with I-band navigation radars. The sonar is the Thales Underwater Systems2076 integrated passive / active search and attack sonar suite with bow, intercept, flank and towed arrays.  Countermeasures suite will include decoys and Electronic Support Measures (ESM).-- two multi-function antenna arrays which are mounted on the two non-hull penetrating optronics masts.

Brown Bird RPG Net

    Source: Popular Science 4
U.S. Army
A small anti-RPG missile that fires out kevlar nets to entangle incoming RPGs fired at helicopters.  The idea,  "the chopper’s radar calculates the speed and trajectory of an incoming grenade within milliseconds. Half a second later, pods of launch tubes on the helicopter aim and fire between one and eight unguided yard-long rockets on an intercept course with the grenade. The rocket’s aim doesn’t have to be precise because each drags a braided steel-cable parachute woven with Kevlar. In the next second, these fast-opening chutes inflate to form a series of six-foot-wide bombproof nets, catching the grenade and dragging it to the ground." 4

Full Spectrum Active Protection Close-in Layered Shield - FCLAS
U.S. Army
Projectile based system that will attempt to detect, track, and provide counter-fire to defeat incoming attacks on ground or low speed aerial vehicles.  "A fully functional FCLAS system will consist of three components: the countermunition, launcher, and system controller. The countermunition searches for, tracks and intercepts incoming threats. The launcher is a flexible design and has the ability to be adapted to meet the needs of each platform that utilizes FCLAS. The system controller maintains central control over the FCLAS launchers and countemunitions. FCLAS can be easily integrated onto any vehicle platform—coupled with armor it will provide robust protection against the RPG." 5

RPG Shield
U.S. Army
U.K. Army
An electronic defense that renders some RPG warheads to small bits that do not cause significant damage to the vehicle being damaged.  The shield is useless against heavy warheads such as a round sent along by a tank, but against some RPGs can be quite effective.

Surveilling Miniature Attack Cruise Missile -- SMACM

U.S. Army,
U.S. Air Force
Small and lightweight loitering cruise missile.  SMACM’s tri-mode seeker package combines millimeter wave (MMW) radio frequency radar, an imaging infrared sensor and a semiactive laser (SAL) seeker.  The three sensors offer an all-weather capability to quickly categorize targets through data fusion. The tri-mode seeker provides high combat identification probability with extremely low false alarm rates against targets.  Article

Low Cost Autonomous Attack System -- LOCAAS

U.S. Army
Un-powered or powered, brilliant submunitions. The 36 inch long powered system weighs about 90 pounds, has a miniature 30 pound thrust turbo-jet engine, and a range beyond 100 nautical miles. It is equipped with a laser radar sensor, sophisticated image processing electronics, full authority flight control system and multi-mode warhead.  designed to attack high priority mobile or relocateable targets, armored or soft targets with high precision. The weapon can loiter at an altitude of 750 feet over the battlefield, flying at a speed of 200 knots for about 30 minutes, covering a footprint of 25 square nautical miles, and take out high-priority targets such as mobile air defenses, mobile surface/surface missile launchers and long range rocket systems.  Article

Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System -- APKWS

U.S. Army, U.S. Marines
2.75-inch laser-guided helicopter rockets designed to hit within two meters of a designated target from as far away as 5,000 meters. The idea is to offer a precision, laser-guided version of the Hydra-70mm rocket now fired from the Army’s Apache AH-64D, Kiowa Warrior, Blackhawk and the Marine Corps’ AH-1W and AH-1Z SuperCobra attack choppers and possibly UAVs.
