Intelligence: Technical Means of Collection

Technical Means of Collection is the intelligence gathering method which uses technical means, i.e. computers, radio gear, overhead photography, etc. as the primary means of collection of the material.

This is different than TECHINT -- the collection of information on the technical data on opposing forces weapons systems, personnel capabilities, or other information in the technical sphere.

Many Intelligence Directors have made the career limiting mistake of relying too much on Technical Means of Collection, assuming that everything can be seen or heard using the various high tech sensors. But as they have learned the hard way, it is difficult (and sometimes deadly) to mount a mission with solid HUMINT data.

Thanks to an ex member of the 203 Military Intelligence Battalion (TECHINT) for a proper definition of TECHINT, see the 513 Military Intelligence Brigade page for more info.
