US Coast Guard
In an interview with the Navy League's Sea Power magazine (August, 1990), the new Coast
Guard Commandant, Admiral J. William Kime, stated his philosophy on the mission for the
USCG, "...I want to be able to provide balance among all the operating forces the Coast
Guard has: law enforcement, environmental protection, and our traditional missions of aids
to navigation, search and rescue, and boating safety." 1
Later in that same article he reponded to a probe on any new roles for the Coast Guard,
with he reply, "...The lead role in the maritime drug-interdiction effort; also in the air-
interdiction effort, and obviously the environmental initiatives that have come forward.
We have added responsibilities in vessel documentation, and Congress has passed a
number of marine-safety laws that have given us new responsibilities."
