Wahhabism, Updated 12/22/2003

A Muslim puritan movement founded in the 18th century by M. Wahhab. Members call themselves Muwahhidun, a name derived from their emphasis on the absolute oneness of God.  This is an extremely violent form of Jihadic Muslim beliefs, and its teachings are extremely anti-western, anti-christian, anti-foreigner.  Those who formed the Taliban in Afghanistan came from a particularly virulent group from Pakistan (see 1970s).  Journalist and author Stephen Scwhartz says "“Bin Laden is a Wahhabi. So are the suicide bombers in Israel. So are his Egyptian allies, who exulted as they stabbed foreign tourists to death at Luxor... So are the Algerian terrorists... So are the Taliban-style guerrillas in Kashmir.” 1  Fared Zarekia, a journalist covering the middle East for Newsweek magazine agrees, stating, "It is clear that Saudi Arabia now exports two products around the globe—oil and religious fanaticism." 1
